My General Overview: I initially wanted a netbook for it's obvious purpose, MOBILITY. =] I originally was going to get the 900HA model but decided on the 1000HA model instead because many people were saying that the keyboard on the 900HA was uncomfortable to type on & was too small. So, I stuck with the 1000HA which got tons of shining reviews for being both FUNCTIONAL and signifcantly mobile. =] Here are a couple pictures of how big my Asus EEE PC 1000HA is in comparison to my Gateway M-6847.

Also, here are some sizes in inches to compare the difference in size between the two:
Gateway Screen = 15.4" Widescreen
Asus Screen = 10" Widescreen
Gateway Dimensions = 14" x 10" x 1.5"
Asus Dimensions = 10.5" x 7.5" x 1.1"
Gateway Weight = 6.2 lbs (but i think it's more like 7... 7.5 with the battery in the laptop)
Asus Weight = 3.2 lbs (this sounds about right.)
When I first got it, I was still surprised by how small it was. LOL. Granted, I knew it'd be small, but I was just so use to my mid-sized notebook that this thing definitely looked puny in comparison. =P Upon initial inspection I was impressed by how lightweight & compact the netbook was. It came with several items in the box. It comes with:
Everything it came with is shown in this picture, MINUS the paper/documents/reading material.
- An Asus Sleeve (you don't have to buy a sleeve, it comes with one that's custom made for yours)
- A Recovery Disk
- A Cleaning Microfiber Cloth (just like everyone & their momma says, this thing is a fingerprint magnet, but so was my old hp notebook & my current gateway notebook. LOL. =P)
- The AC Adapter & Power Brick
- Reading Material (Warranty Card, Instruction Manuals, etc.)
There are definitely some pros to note here. The complimentary sleeve is a plus because as we all know, most notebooks and/or netbooks don't come with many (if any) accessories, just the necessities (i.e. AC adapter, power brick, & reading material). The fact that they already give you a sleeve to protect your netbook with is awesome AND it's made specifically for your model so this completely takes away the guesswork of trying to buy a protective cover for it. =] The Microfiber Cloth was a nice extra add in as well, although my old HP did come with a microfiber cloth since it too had a glossy finish. Also, the AC adapter & power brick have velcro straps attached to their cords which totally eliminates the need for rubber bands or anything of that sort when you travel. They're attached to the cords of both the AC adapter & power brick which allows you to easily wrap up your cords neatly every time you need to travel. =] Here are pictures of the velcro straps:

Note how it's ATTACHED to the cord making it so that the velcro straps don't get LOST. =]

This is how it looks when you ravel up the cords & secure them for travel using the attached velcro strap. =] NICE! *thumbs up*
After examing everything that came with the eee pc, I immediately started using it via AC adapter & held off charging the battery till later that night after installing programs I felt were necessity. =P I installed an anti-virus, microsoft word, mozilla firefox, ccleaner, iTunes, & opted to try out the email client they included by default (Windows Live Mail instead of Mozilla Thunderbird). I also installed a couple of apps that proved to be useful such as eeetoogle, keytweak, & cleartype tuning. I didn't have to uninstall much since this didn't come preloaded with a bunch of junk. Another plus because when I got my HP it had TONS of crap on there that I didn't need & therefore had to spend a good amount of time uninstalling programs... definitely a pain.
After doing all that, I decided to see how it's performance was... from a general non-demanding point of view. It ran pretty good, not as fast as my notebook (but my notebook definitely has better specs) but still rather good. You have to keep in mind this machine is made more so for MOBILITY & is not intended for HIGH PERFORMANCE purposes. So keep this in mind and you'll definitely see the beauty of this thing. It opens programs pretty fast, not SUPER fast, but not super slow. I average mozilla firefox taking about 2 seconds, which isn't bad at all. Windows Movie Maker (prepackaged) opens almost immediately. This was honestly surprising & actually kinda cool. I wouldn't suggest video editing on this machine though, DEFINITELY wouldn't recommend it because it would either become irritating because of the screen size or lack of speed. Like I said, netbooks aren't intended for demanding programs like photoshop, windows movie maker, etc. Overall, the performance was definitely very good & impressive to say the least.
I tried watching some YouTube videos on it & could watch them fine. I was able to watch normal & high quality videos without a problem. =] HOWEVER, I tried to watch one HD video on YouTube & that didn't work out too good. LOL. The video streamed, but very poorly. It was laggy & very choppy. This could have something to do with my configurations somewhere, but who knows. It also probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade the ram seeing how I still have the stock 1 gig in. I'll probably be upgrading the ram soon. =]
As far as adjusting to the keyboard size (92% the size of a standard keyboard) it's actually not all that bad. I was EXTREMELY concerned about this because I NEEDED to be able to type on the netbook for extended periods of time seeing how this was going to replace my notebook in terms of travel. When I say travel, I mean any sort of travel (school, vacations, etc.) At first it felt, well, weird. LOL. After a couple of minutes of surfing the web & trying it out though, you quickly adjust. Now, I type on it with no problem. =] I DID however have a problem with that INFAMOUS right shift key. The placement on the keyboard stays true to the traditional layout of a QWERTY keyboard, but since the size of the keyboard is compressed, it does feel different when touch typing. I had the constant problem of hitting the up arrow key instead of the right shift key. This was a common problem that many people complained about as well, but it's easily remedied. I just remapped the keys inversely so that my up arrow key is now my right shift key & vice versa. Problem solved. =] So touch typing can be achieved on this machine, no problem.

Here's a side by side comparison of how my notebook's keyboard & how my netbook's keyboard look. Not a HUGE difference. =] I think that Asus claiming that the Asus eee pc 1000ha's keyboard is 92% the size of a normal notebook keyboard is pretty accurate.
The webcam in my EEE PC is a 1.3 megapixel webcam, BUT the resolution output that it's set to by default is a LOWER resolution than it's capable of. That sorta did bother me because the webcam on my notebook is also a 1.3 megapixel camera but when both are used in skype, my notebook webcam is NOTICEABLY better. I've been trying to figure out how to change the default resolution displayed in skype on my netbook, but haven't had much luck. =P I guess it's alrite since I don't skype too much anyway. =P But still, I don't like that Asus set the default resolution on the webcam to be lower than what it's capable of.
The multi-touch scrollpad is interesting yet irritating at the same time. The scrollpad on the netbook is SENSITIVE, so sometimes while your typing you might accidently touch the keypad and have your scrolling/pointing arrow end up somewhere else on the page & this will cause you to start typing in the middle of a paragraph that you just finished. This is easily remedied by just turning off the scrollpad & using a mouse to turn it back on once you're done typing. Although it's easily remedied it's still somewhat annoying. LOL. Also, since my EEE PC has multi-touch, it will misread some of the gestures I do on the scrollpad. For instance, I'll be scrolling (scroll up or down scrollpad w/ two fingers) up or down in a browser & it'll mistake it as a minimize window command (tap w/ two fingers). Sometimes, I think I'd rather do without the multi-touch but then again, I can see how it can come in useful. =P I have mixed feelings about the multi-touch feature as of now... maybe I just need to get use to it. =P I can always roll back the driver (I updated the driver for the multi-touch feature) if the multi-touch feature does bother me that much or disable certain features that I don't really need, so no big.
Internet connection is stable but more on the weak side. My notebook's wifi card is definitely better reception wise. Don't get me wrong, the wifi card on this netbook will definitely get you connected to the internet & will keep you connected as long as you're in a reasonable range, but the range on the EEE PC's wifi card definitely isn't as strong/long reaching as the wifi card on my notebook. Not a problem really since I've never had an issue with wifi connectivity with the netbook, but just an observation worth mentioning for those who may care.
Screen size doesn't really bother me. Some people complain that the screen size as well as font size on this particular machine can be bothersome. I personally don't find it bothersome at all, but I don't have poor vision either. I'd just suggest setting a default minimum font display in your browser & enabling cleartype. This will make a difference in font display & general browsing comfortability whether you have poor eye sight or not. =]
Overall a fairly decent netbook for a fairly decent price (depending on where you get it, of course.) I'm completely content with mine & definitely don't regret buying it. =] It's very useful & would make the PERFECT machine for someone who just needs a netbook for light/basic needs (internet browsing, checking emails, note taking, etc.) But I wouldn't suggest this netbook as a notebook or desktop replacement, especially for people with hardcore needs like computer gaming, video/picture editing, & things of that sort. This is a great SECONDARY machine to have... so more so a convenience, not a necessity. But again, it could work as a budget desktop replacement for someone with MINIMAL needs. =]
PROS:Definitely more mobile than most (if not all) NOTEBOOKS out there, seeing how this is a NETBOOK. =] I feel it's the perfect mix of mobility & power. It's not extremely powerful but definitely decently powerful. It's not extemely tiny, but mobile enough to be toted around with ease. Like I said, I personally find it to be a perfect balance. Decent performance & specs for being such a compact machine. It has a larger hard drive capacity since it uses your standard HDD hardrive instead of an SSD, & for me that's what I prefer, but that's just personally. Easy access to upgrades (i.e. ram & hard drive) Overall, a very good machine!
CONS:The right shift key is oddly placed, BUT is easily remedied by remapping keys to your desired configuration. Doesn't play HD YouTube videos too well (but I might just have to upgrade my ram or play with my computer settings some more to make it work, we'll see.) Touchpad can be TOO sensitive at times, which can be good or bad... depending.
You'll Like This Product If:- You want something mobile that offers pretty good performance
- You want something you can carry around with ease
- You travel alot & lugging around a 6 -8 lb laptop isn't cutting it for you anymore
- You're on a budget & need a notebook/netbook BUT you have MINIMAL needs
You Won't Like This Product If:- You want a HIGH PERFORMANCE machine that will run demanding programs and applications with EASE
- Extreme MOBILITY is NOT a true concern & performance is your MAIN concern
- You have poor eyesight
- You're COMPLETELY computer illiterate (you don't know how to look up instructions online for how to do things to your computer & follow them) I'm not completely computer illiterate but am far from any sort of pro. LOL. I just know how to follow instructions & can usually figure things out along the way. =] So if you don't get computers at all... I don't suggest getting this since you'd probably want to tweak a few things here & there to make it more comfortable to use.
Would I Re-Purchase This Product? In a HEARTBEAT. Like I said... totally LOVE it & it makes things so much more convenient. LOL. I honestly haven't touched my notebook since I've got this netbook... except when I edited the pictures for this post. LOL. =] But besides that, I'm almost always using my netbook. =] I haven't really done any picture or video editing lately so this netbook suffices for my needs as of late. Like I said, my notebook is for all those more demanding jobs (WoW, video/picture editing, downloading, etc.) So this is an awesome little gadget to have around. I want to buy a big freakn' purse just so I can take this thing with me everywhere. LOL! I only have SMALL purses (ones that only really fit my wallet, cellphone, & cigarettes snugly) but now I want a big one just for this little fella. LOL. I'll probably end up buying one this weekend. Haha. =]
